Manifesto against the 2007 Decree Project, whereby the Generalitat de Catalunya wants to allow the hunting with glue and “filat” (net) methods.
The people signing this manifesto want to express our disagreement with this decree project and with any attempt to legalize bird hunting with glue and “filat” method, which we consider primitive methods, for the following reasons:
1. Such practices would be an attack against the numerous bird species of our olive groves, since they are no-selective, massive and uncontrollable methods, which destroy a large amount of birds from about 51 protected species. Such practices would have a negative and possible irreversible impact on biodiversity.
2. It is a mistreatment of animals, which allows the massive and cruel death of hundreds of thousands of thrushes which are already declining in number. Since trushes are born in North and Central Europe, and migrate through Catalonia, this practice would be particularly negative for this group of birds.
3. This practice could not be justified by the losses birds may cause to agriculture, as an economical sector. Justification as a recreational hobby cannot be supported since this practice does not even respect its own tradition. It is not a cultural desirable activity which places Catalunya at the queue of Europe in terms of fauna protection, and leading the restoring of obsolete hunting customs that have been eliminated along the XX century.
4. We are especially ashamed of the fact that such a decree, opposed to emergent environmentalist values and sensitivities, is being supported by a Department governed by a political party (Iniciativa per Catalunya – Verds) that is supposed to be ecologist, and which belongs to the Green Group of the European Parliament. This proposal is disregarding the European and Spanish laws concerning bird protection.
Therefore, according to European, Spanish and Catalan current legislation, and according to the numerous existing court decisions, we request the Catalan Government:.
- to accept that “bird hunting with glue and net method” is a practice that is not selective and is not controllable.
- to state the illegality of “bird hunting with glue and net method” and to immediately proceed to take the necessary measures and efforts that will definitively and rapidly extinct such practices.
